I keep hearing conservatives complain that an impeachment “overturns an election.”
Huh?
The Electoral College already overturned an election, and Trump only “won” that (by a mere 77,000 total across three major industrial states — a margin of a fraction of a percent) because of Russian interference, voter suppression and a Republican FBI head (who would soon regret his treachery) putting his thumb on the scale.
But be that as it may, Impeachment is a CONSTITUTIONAL REMEDY.
And as flawed as the election was, IMPEACHMENT OF A PRESIDENT DOES NOT OVERTURN AN ELECTION.
The vice president — whose only substantial Constitutional duty is to step in and fill a presidential vacancy — WAS ALSO ELECTED. He was chosen by Trump, ran with Trump and the same election that gave us a President Trump also gave us a backup President Pence.
