Back in the days when I refereed football ( soccer) I had no hesitation for giving a yellow card to a player that I thought was deliberately taking a dive. Unsporting Conduct – Time Wasting – in case anyone is interested in how the infraction was judged.
I used to tell players I found them guilty of overacting and giving a bad performance.
When players realized that I would either ignore their antics, or penalize the more egregious fakers, the “dives” decreased, considerably. Doesn’t mean I didn’t get fooled once and awhile, I did but the “actors” had to be really convincing.
Like many referees, past and present, I applaud FIFA’s actions but we have to wonder what took them so long ?
The NBA has only itself to blame. They loosened the rules and allowed far too much physical contact in the game. Professional basketball has become playground basketball for high priced thugs !
