Ok, here’s the thing. This toon implies that Trump is different in essence (by being a nutball) from other Presidents. I would disagree. Trump is a typical Republican POTUS. He is different only in a matter of style. I will verify this by history.
Generally, people tell me that post the Civil Rights Act, Republicans changed. While it’s true that racism became a party standard immediately after the passage of the Civil Rights Act, all the rest of their “modern” baggage was present in foul heaps long prior to that. Teddy Roosevelt was the last “different” Republican POTUS, and his legacy soon died. By the time we got to Coolidge, it was dead.
So let us examine the record of Calvin Coolidge. He hated regulation of any sort. He followed the fantasy of his Secretary of the Treasury, Andrew Mellon, who advocated “scientific taxation” — the notion that lowering taxes will increase, rather than decrease, government receipts. He did a Nixon on the Federal budget, keeping it flatlined and pretended he could not see the state governments picking up the slack and growing their budgets hugely. He also largely ignored the Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927, which allowed for vast human suffering under his administration, with more than 200,000 persons of color forced to live for long periods in tent city relief camps.
Golly gee whillikers, does that sound the least bit familiar? Kinda like every Republican you ever heard of, including TRUMP?
Coolidge was POTUS from 1923 to 1929. He was succeeded by Hoover. This is going to get long, so continued below.
