Then: We gotta break up this monopoly to give cusomers more choices!
Now: We gotta merge these behemoths to give consumers more choices!
I was just thinking about this – the break up of Ma Bell allowed for many smaller companies to take up the phone game, and then rates skyrockted anyway. This collection of corporations does not bode well, but breaking up companies gives them an excuse to raise their prices anyway. The myth of competition in this “capitalistic” society is shattered when you take a look at the few who own 90% of everything at the top. Break them up, merge them together, break them up – regardless the CEO will make money, and get his parachute (and not have to pay taxes for years after) while the workers will lose houses and lives. But sure the break up was good for consumers for the first fifteen minutes.
