The irony is that forty years ago, it was the Republicans complaining that the Democrats couldn’t govern with Jimmy Carter in the White House. And they had a point. What the House really needs is an independent who can serve as Speaker. Someone with bona fides on both sides of the aisle, analogous to Angus King (I-ME) in the Senate. Maybe a former Speaker, like John Boehner or Paul Ryan?
