I was hiking in the Utah desert this week, trying hard to minimize my impact and to “tiptoe through the crypto.” The thought occurred to me that’s there’s a fairly reasonable argument to be made for the question — What does it matter that my footprints may last for hundreds of years or more?

First, in the coming decades the Southwest and many other areeas are going to experience far more severe abuse from a significantly hotter and dryer climate — the crypto is going to fry anyway. And second, in a few generations humans will no longer be around in significant numbers — the crypto will have millions of years to recover after we’re gone.

Then I paused and remembered that it’s almost always important to try. For my own sense of integrity and honesty, I need to give everything my best shot. Of course it might turn out to be futile in the end. But I will know that my eyes were open and I did what I could.

So let’s all do what we can to tiptoe through the crypto.

You’re denigrating the wrong platform. Wikipedia is one of the most shining examples of collaborative and self-regulating information sources. It should be supported, not smeared.
