   That day Caulfield made a meaningful difference to two people’s days.

   From Allie’s perspective, Caulfield made her smile and forget about how bad things were with her mum and dad. Took her out of herself, as we say.

   From Mrs Olsen’s perspective, Caulfield converted a little girl who wasn’t, as we say, in the same room as everybody else into a girl who was alert and engaged. There is little worse for a teacher than a kid who isn’t engaged.

   I’m sure that if it were a real school, Mr Spaetzle would not have hesitated to make Caulfield skip a few grades. He’s a good man, and every time that Jef makes fun of him, it has nothing to do with his competence as a head teacher.

   You would think they were being forced to read it at gunpoint every day. We’re allowed to dislike some strips, but we can unsubscribe from them at any time, and nobody makes us subscribe to them in the first place. As long as the papers will buy them, Andrews McMeel and others will continue to sell them.
