Why, Mr. Pony21? Because we’re living on a good deal less than we were when we were young and full of energy. You can moonlight if your income doesn’t cover your needs. We can’t even imagine getting up in time to go to work. How old are you, 21? Send me an sms on my little pink cloud when you’re 87 and tell me there isn’t a big difference between your fixed income and mine. eileen And ps, isn’t Zonker’s father making a point? In 1910 when the French started collecting retirement insurance from the lowest-paid workers, they couldn’t pay them back enough to support families on. It was the Catholic Church that stepped in and supported wives and children, and if they hadn’t, the whole program would have failed. Now it stays afloat on its own, but thank heaven for the Catholic Church. [Mr. Editor, please send this to his private email if I’m too verbose for the blowback — I usually am — and invite him to answer if interested?]

To Ignatz I’d like to reply that who you are doesn’t determine what you like. I’m 87 and female, and I have grudging admiration for Frank Zappa. And to pauljmsn I’d like to ask who — ever since the strips began — ever didn’t love BD. Name me a character, from Daisy Doonesbury of the Tea Party to Alice of the streets, who wasn’t irresistible.
