   Don’t sell the photographs!! Argh, whenever I see estate or yard sales with photos, I always go and beg them to send the photos to the family genealogist (every family has someone interested in it to some degree) and they are such a horrible loss!

   Teachers do not get paid over the summer (at least in California where my experience is). Their district may assist them by retaining a portion of their pay during the months they are paid (usually Sept through June) then giving them that money for the summer. I’ve seen that payment done as either one lump sum or divided into three checks but delivered at the end of June either way. I always thought it was a bad idea to leave 1/4 of your pay with the district for them to collect interest on, rather than banking that money yourself and earning interest on it, but I guess budgeting can be difficult for some. I’ve never known teachers to be eligible for unemployment over the summer, as they are considered to be employed unless they are discharged at the end of their school year only to be rehired at the start of the next school year. This is often the case for new teachers before getting tenure and in difficult budget years for the youngest (last hired) teachers who do have tenure. When that happens, there is no guarantee of being rehired at the end of summer. It’s a real gamble not to look for a new teaching job hoping that you’ll be picked up in August. I don’t think a few months unemployment benefits are worth such a tenuous situation.Oh, and I’d argue that I was at least as excited for the start of summer as my students were every year!
