I worked once in a local suburban hospital where a patient suffered severe lacerations to the colon (large intestine) during a colonoscopy, spilling infected bowel contents into the peritoneal (abdominal) cavity, and requiring urgent resuscitation, then ongoing intensive (‘expensive’) care. They survived.
