The cartoonist’s attitude is a reflection of his misunderstanding of a lot of things (a polite way of saying stupid). That said I looked at the Wikipedia entry for the Hope Memorial Bridge and went on to look at photos of the Guardians. They are wonderful examples of the architecture of the time, and it is amazing that they have been retained until now (from Wikipedia there was one effort to get rid of them). The bridge was thought of first in the early 1920s but not finished until 1932 – i.e. three years into The Depression which began in 1929. No mention of how far the work had gone by 1929 – were the Guardians physically created or installed by then? – but to have continued with the project for three years into The Depression was also a feat (there’s probably a big story of how the budget was retained … allowing that alongside this project there were probably other things that did not get done but were needed). At the time the bridge was conceived and built the means of transportation and the things transported (gravel in the one truck?) did indicate and pay tribute to the technology/work that developed Cleveland (and lots of cities). I say all this as a Canadian who has just learned this wee bit about American history. Sometime in the next few days I’m going to take a look at two same period buildings in London, Ontario where I live and admire the carvings on them. I’ve never paid much attention to them before, but realize they deserve a look. Best regards, Maureen

The Philadelphia Story, 1940, with Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy StewartMaybe 20 minutes from the end … Hepburn’s and Stewart’s characters are basically accused of bedding down with each other, while drunk, the night before Hepburn’s wedding. Stewart’s comment in denial of this is “there are rules about that”, meaning that a man does not “take advantage of” (euphemism for “have sex with”) a woman while she is drunk.Throughout history, men have “taken advantage of” … but they know it is wrong. Great movie. See it if you can.
