A lot of people really resented April for years after this incident. Mainly, because of her rambunctious and defiant nature of her parents wishes constantly getting her in trouble. Including this one which led to the death of Farley. She will eventually figure it all out though. I think Johnstone wanted April to be a bit more rebellious and realistic due to the times of her writing.
