I THINK (!!) vaughnrl2003 meant that the “truly backward” are the ones who don’t employ it and therefore get confused if someone uses it on them. Side note: there was a very recent and funny episode of Young Sheldon where Sheldon understands reverse psychology too well, and so reads it into everything everyone in this episode says to him, until he is contemplating the deviousness of reverse-reverse psychology.

I didn’t mean to claim that he has read history, only that he has the personality flaws and general amorality (and immorality) to recognize tactics that work to his desired end and the ambition to put them to use.
Yeah, I never really understood that attitude. I’m guessing it comes from the ancient Catholic belief that everyone must pay for their sins, and the church tells your what your sins are.
