    Thanks for the lesson but…

Feasting is done for many celebrations, yes, but as far as Christmas feasting it is on another level. The rich food, the sheer amount of it and the sugary things we adore all have roots in the pagan tradition. Germanic though it may have begun, it was also in the Nordic area, in fact King Haakon I of Norway lied about being Christian when he first took power in the still mostly heathen north, and literally passed a law changing all the Yule festivities to Christian ones until finally passing a law requiring all of his people to practice Christianity—whether or not they wanted to under penalty of death. Real Christian of him don’t you think?

Also I don’t think the Christmas tree has literally anything to do with the fact that Christ was crucified on two planks of wood. And if it were, why in the world would you invite in a tree to your home if it symbolized the death of your lord and savior? Evergreen branches, trees, and garlands have been used since ancient times by Egyptians, Chinese, and Hebrews as symbols of eternal life, long before Christianity came about. It is not solely a symbol of your faith.

And can we just say there are a lot of reasons for celebration at the end of the year in every religion? Christianity doesn’t get to block the market just because there are a lot of you. We all celebrate in our own ways with our own traditions, but do not mistake that your celebration is the only one that is valid or worthwhile just because you personally find it valid and worthwhile. Christians are notorious for tunnel-vision and nowhere have I experienced this more than at Christmas time.

Merry Christmas, Happy Channukah, Blessed Yule, and a Happy Non-denominational Winter Season to you and yours.

Jesus was born in the Spring. There are no lambs born in December. There are no shepherds in the fields in December. No one in their right mind would plan a census taking in the dead of friggin’ winter when no one would really be able to travel to the places of their birth in the first place. Christmas, as it is defined now, was a placeholder that Christian leaders created because of people celebrating Yule which corresponds with the Winter Solstice, December 21. Yule was considered to be a ‘pagan’ holiday and so it was taught in church that instead of celebrating the return of the sun on December 24-25 they decided to celebrate Jesus instead. Everything from feasting to your holiday tree is pagan at it’s source. Jesus has nothing to actually do with it, and everything to do with what people ‘believe’.

How about a dog-walker? Or a dog-sitter? How about just working at an animal shelter cleaning out stalls, walking dogs, helping them get adopted?
