    The attribution to Groucho (Marx) is questionable.

    An early attempt to have computers understand natural language was to use 1) a dictionary of the parts of speech that each word could be and 2) rules about what sequences of parts of speech are grammatically correct. The system found four meaningful interpretations for “Time flies like an arrow”. The interpretations corresponded to:

    1. Times moves in the same way that an arrow does.2. Measure the speed of flies in the same way that the speed of an arrow is measured.3. Measure the speed of flies that resemble an arrow.4. A type of fly, called “time flies”, enjoy an arrow.
