    At that time, they only had two bombs, of differing construction, neither of which they were 100% sure would work. So a “watch this guys!” followed by a thud would have been counterproductive.

    A ‘struggling plot line’ has two interpretations.

    1) The author is struggling with writing the plot line.

    2) The plot line is concerning a struggle with which the characters are involved

    I am pretty sure the comment was made ‘tongue in cheek’, but is always worth remembering that the events of 1944 are as remote to now as the ending of the American Civil War, and the abolition of slavery, was to people born in 1944.

    (No excuse if the comment was genuine though!)

    Dad was in the British merchant navy, and pay was not great. One time during the war, he was seriously ill for 3 months, and was in hospital in Scotland. So, of course, he was not paid, and his family (South coast of England) were almost destitute.
