“When one breaks the law that conscience tells him is unjust, he must do it openly, he must do it cheerfully, he must do it lovingly, he must do it civilly — not uncivilly — and he must do it with a willingness to accept the penalty.” —MLK
In Trumpworld, cruelty is a virtue in part because it reflects hierarchy and privilege. It denotes power. I am cruel to because I can be cruel with impunity. All hail the cruel.
Now factor in the damage caused by climate change: “The NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) has released the final update to its 2023 Billion-dollar disaster report, confirming a historic year in the number of costly disasters and extremes throughout much of the country. There were 28 weather and climate disasters in 2023, surpassing the previous record of 22 in 2020, tallying a price tag of at least $92.9 billion. This total annual cost may rise by several billion when we’ve fully accounted for the costs of the December 16-18 East Coast storm and flooding event that impacted states from Florida to Maine.”
Air pollution alone was responsible for an estimated 3.2 million deaths per year in 2020, including over 237 000 deaths of children under the age of 5. The combined effects of ambient air pollution and household air pollution are associated with 6.7 million premature deaths annually.
These deaths do not include those associated with other aspects of fossil fuel, production, particularly fracking.
Real suckers conflate support for Palestinians with support for Hamas, just as Iranian (and Russian, Chinese) propagandists intend. After all, disinformation strategies are not actually intended to persuade us. They’re intended to divide us.
