From Wikipedia: Genus Phoneutria: Wandering spiders are so-called because they wander the jungle floor at night, rather than residing in a lair or maintaining a web. Phoneutria are found in forests from Costa Rica southwards throughout South America east of the Andes including Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and into northern Argentina. These spiders acquired their other common name, “banana spider”, because it is claimed that they are occasionally found in shipments of bananas. The genus Phoneutria includes some of the relatively few species of spiders known to present a threat to humans (they are venomous).

No. The blob going into the manhole cover reminded me of the movie “C.H.U.D.” (Rated R) Especially the opening scene. C.H.U.D. stands for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers. Actually the blob in the comic strip isn’t cannibalistic nor humanoid, but definitely seems to be an underground dweller. If you like campy silly horror, watch the sequel, “C.H.U.D. II – Bud the C.H.U.D.” (Also Rated R) :D
