The cashier assumed and thought she was complimenting. Option 1 gives her a chance to be embarrassed inwardly and re-think her assumptions. I like to think that most human beings are decent, but any one of us can be a little ignorant until we learn.
For us, school ended before Memorial Day and restarted after Labor Day. However, I think they should discontinue summer vacation, spring break, semester break, etc., and go to half-days all year round. No need to build more schools, if we can have first and second shift in the existing buildings. Plus the older kids can get daytime part-time jobs if they want/need to.
