Perhaps the cake makes him happy and gives more energy to get up and do things? (That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!) :)

I love the “Gotta Love August” strips. (I personally prefer September, but love the general idea!)

Been trying to figure out where the Stone family lives since I started reading the strip from the beginning (which I just recently started reading.) Hint 1: Strips show all four seasons with wet springs, hot summers, crisp autumns (including orange leaves), and snowy winters. So that puts it somewhere in the northern half of the US or possibly southern Canada. Hint 2: Some of the strips show fireflies which are normally only found in the eastern half of the US. (Some species exist in the west, but don’t light up.) Hint 3: At least one strip showed mudpuppies which are also only found in the eastern parts of US and Canada. Hint 4: The Paris and Tokyo signs in today’s strip… okay, those threw me a bit. My TAKE: It is Anytown, USA/Canada/etc. :-) Even those that live in different climates can – relate to / understand / wish they were part of – the Stone family. I am thoroughly enjoying my trip through their lives. :-)

I tend to skip the comments, but happy I saw this one from Jan Eliot. I don’t remember Stone Soup being in my newspaper so have just recently started reading it from the beginning. Love it! (It has been a pleasant distraction from chemo treatments.) Not sure if you are still reading the comments, Jan, but thank you for this very relatable family. :)

If I remember correctly, I once read somewhere that the dying or missing mother theme was due to Walt Disney feeling guilty about the loss of his own mother. When he first made it big, he bought his parents a house but the furnace leaked. His dad became sick, but lived. His mom, unfortunately, passed away.
