Learned to read with my brothers' comic books. Often got chased out of the house by my mom on pretty summer days, but I showed her.... I took my comic books to read outside, usually in a tree somewhere. Today, I have a subscription to a real, 7-days-a-week, locally owned newspaper and the comics page is the first thing I read every morning.

You mean the secret bunker at the Greenbrier? (big enough to house all of congress in the event of a nuclear war.) It’s part of their history tours now. Very interesting.

I think it’s much more likely that the younger sibling would tease the older about a boy/girl friend, not the other way around. Mike might think Liz is too young to have a boyfriend, but that’s not how he’s acting here.

Ha! No. Not so much. Our nearly 50 years together, minus the angst of child raising, has been just fine – happy and pretty productive. The columnist Dear Abby did a survey on that a while back and found that child-free couples are happier – and many people with children (who probably love their children very much) often feel their lives would have been happier/better without children. I had great parents and a happy childhood, but I never really wanted my own children (and neither did my husband). Being a parent is not for everyone.

I’m sure he’s out there somewhere for anyone foolish enough to pay him.

Yes, people “shop” at a shelter, choosing among many deserving animals, and the fees helps support the shelter that in turn helps place even more dogs in new homes. When you buy a dog the money paid just goes to the breeder.

I realize it’s a dramatic stance to take, and I don’t expect most people to agree with me. But I don’t think there is really a need for any specific breeds. A good dog (or cat) is good – period – and that is not dependent on it being any particular breed. Breeding dogs or cats for particular looks or characteristics is really no different from eugenics.

Breeding and selling of cats and dogs should be against the law as long as there are any pets in shelters needing homes. Adopt. Don’t shop.
