   Hey! Another DP Geezer! (for you young ‘ens, it used to be called Data Processing). The first company I ever worked for hadn’t successfully completed a contract in its 10 year existence. Most ended up in lawsuits. In my two years there, I successfully completed 5. I did it by watching how the users did thier jobs, which lead to solutions that made thier lives easier, not harder.

   In my first internship, I was asked to make a small change to some report. In studying the thing, I realized a one line change to a sort would save the users some time. I didn’t realize it would cut 3 days a month down to 2 hours. Rookie green college kid on summer internship gets a party in his honor.

   I’m one of the boss’s good guys and it still feels like this when he messages me and says, ‘I need to talk’. And everytime he’s done this, it’s been a promotion or a bonus. It still feels like I’m gonna get sacked.

   One of my wife’s complaints is that I always think I’m right. And an even bigger problem she says, is that I usually really am right and don’t make lots of mistakes. Partly comes from being an engineer. Partly from 30+ years of working in a world where risk mitigation is a major portion of the perspective to the job at hand.

   But from my side, such a track record makes for too much ego and serious introspection when I do make a mistake.

    Reminds me of my previous dog Sheila, an Aussie/Chow mix, who would knock folks over. First time she saw an infant who was only about 6-8 weeks old, mom put baby down on the floor on a blanket and Sheila lay down 4 feet away. Then crept up to about a foot away so the baby could beat her on the nose.
