   Calvin, I think you definitely proved that the compass came from up ‘North’ on top of the tree to down ‘South’ to the ground. Consider yourself a great success. That the compass did not survive is merely a side issue with which you need not be bothered..

   She would rather have the horse-fly, I think.

   Reminds me of a joke in ‘Three Men in a Boat’ where George plays his banjo to soothe Harris off his headache and Harris says he would rather have the headache.
