During the Vietnam War, the army reported this. U.S. troops would enter a village and distribute canned food to win hearts and minds. Some time later, the Viet Cong would go into the village and gather the villagers for a lecture. The lecturer would be that the Americans were barbarians. The lecturer would hold up a can of corn, which he would then open to show that what was inside was the same as on the picture on the can. He would do the same with a can of peaches or pears. He would then hold up a jar of Gerber’s Baby Food with the cute Gerber baby on the outside. He would usually choose veal, so that when he opened the jar and spooned out the contents he could say that Americans eat babies.
