So whatever happened with basketball??? Milford made a last-second shot to increase the lead (but went down in points) against their rival. No playdowns, or was that the state championship game and we missed all of the postseason? (It’s hard to imagine the team wasn’t good enough to make the playdowns with a future pro and the supporting cast they had.)

On March 21st Henry had the score listed as 80-79 Milford with one minute left in the game. Either a) Henry has imagined a new sports technique called reverse scoring b) He can’t keep track of the nonsense he is “writing” anymore or c) He is rushing through the “sports” part so he can imagine other new ways of ruining the strip or d) all of the above. What a joke.

A few days ago there was less than 1 minute left in the game. VT took the ball up the court and committed an offensive foul, burning off more clock. If ToBe is one of the best players on the team, why wasn’t he on the court during crunch time?

    Oops, I meant Kobe Bryant…

Or AL Jefferson, Tyson Chandler, Rashard Lewis, Andrew Bynum, Jermaine ONeal, Darryl Dawkins, Dwight Howard, Tracy McGrady, Kevin Garnett and Tracy McGrady to name a few…

I’ve read Gil Thorp for over 40 years. Today I am unsubscribing out of principle. There hasn’t been one story arc that I have found intriguing or interesting in the past year.

Gil Thorp is no longer a strip about High School Sports, and when sports makes a cameo in the strip it is remarkably bad or inaccurate.

I have a Google Alert set for when Henry is (finally) fired or moves on to greener pastures, then I’ll give it another try.

I think that most of the complaints (all of mine) are not about any of the social issues. They are about the abandonment of high school sports reality. (Rainbow kick, Korean Nightmare Transfer, Tobe starting at running back as a transgender boy).

If the strip was about Gil Thorp – History Teacher or Gil Thorp – Counselor then none of this would matter. But it is Gil Thorp – High School Football, Basketball and Baseball Coach.

Do the work, know the subject, get the sports right. That’s all I am asking for.

So according to this site, there are 14,573 people that follow Gil Thorp. Using a site called the Way Back Machine (https://archive.org/web/) you can look back at published pages. On 8-18-22 Gil Thorp had 14,575 followers. (On 7-28-21 there were 14,449 and 0n 9-20-20 there were 14,364 followers)

So the idea that the new “sports-lite” iteration of Gil Thorp is seeing an increase in readers doesn’t seem to be supported by the numbers on this site.

@henrybarajas Or, continue to mock lifelong readers of the strip. Swallow your pride, put your agenda on the back burner and work hard at your weaknesses to augment your strengths – kind of like how a high school athlete might make themselves better at their craft.

The common theme I see among the comments here is not your introduction of new things, but your lack of understanding about basic high school sports.

There are rules for how many pitches a pitcher can throw as well as mandated time off between appearances, so as far as Pedro getting benched he could just pitch the next day as Rob states above. And Henry, the readers will stop giving you crap when you stop screwing up basic high school sports information (while writing a high school sports strip) Be better.
