Now maybe “Joe” and Llewellenbruce will get that Dilbert comic from a few years back. (The one where the Pointy-Haired-Boss sends an email to someone in Japan, but he doesn’t know the language, so he types his email in all capital letters.)

Typing an e-mail in all caps is really considered as yelling.

When I have laryngitis due to a sore throat I can still whisper. That’s what she should do.

Yes, typing in all caps is considered yelling. It’s rude too!

Writing in all caps is writing in all caps. Common usage decided that would be perceived as the equivalent of yelling. I accept it as part of the environment, but sometimes you just leave the CAPS LOCK button on by mistake.

It’s a funny strip, I didn’t think about him writing instead of speaking in response until she said/wrote that!

Guess I was acting Earlish. But I’m surprised that Earl knew enough about chatting on the Internet to know that all caps is equal to yelling.

    Heh, heh! Very funny Earl.

Macushlalondra–I wish more posters realized that point about how rude it is.

Oh, that is GRRRRRRRRRREAT COMMUNICATION! LOLs! X-D

By the way I always write a note with CAP letters in printed, not handwriting fancy, though.

Its funny, but when in chat and someone uses all caps, its like a slap in the face, and feels like shouting.

?? what do you call unwanted email?? glad you stopped yelling, thank you.

I suppose you could call them junk email, but I like to call it spam instead.

But if people “just leave the caps lock button on by mistake” that means they don’t bother to proof read their posts – which IMO is just as rude!

When I see someone post in all caps I think this is a show off, they think their comment is more important than anyone else’s, it’s like screaming, “Look at me! Over here! The one you all came to see!”

People who spend a great deal of time, whether for business or pleasure, communicating via text -learn- to use a variety of ways to get the tone across in order to minimize miscommunication. Lack of tone or misdirected tone can cause a lot of problems! Emoticons, dashes, italics, caps, font and size changes, ellipses…these are all devices that are used quite differently in e-text from their traditional grammatical uses, mostly because they aid in expressing tone.

I generally look at someone who uses all caps as either a total e-text novice (when feeling generous) or as a rude imbecile (most days) :) Or maybe they really do feel like yelling!

I really love this comic…it never fails to make me laugh and that’s mostly because it hits home on a daily basis.

Oh, guess that makes me a cyber-nerd! :D

And I don’t even have thousands of comic strip comments showing that I’m obviously completely missing the point to my credit.
