Here, Pig, I hope this helps:.meta

A term, especially in art, used to characterize something that is characteristically self-referential.

“So I just saw this film about these people making a movie, and the movie they were making was about the film industry…” “Dude, that’s so meta. Stop before my brain explodes.”

BTW… much as I love this strip….Pearls Before Swine began in 2002.

Puns have been around since way before Roman times….

    (or even Times New Roman.)

Groucho made puns on television in the early 1950’s, The comic strip Frank n’ Ernest, which started in 1972, makes horrible ones almost every day.

Not everyone who writes puns is Pastis… or imitates Pastis or steals from Pastis.Let us put those accusations Pastis… er…. Pastus….

Some of us are just afflicted.Have some sympathy!

@Susan Sunshine—Here’s one of the ignoblest Roman puns of them all:

BRUTUS—Julius, is it true you ate a dozen hot dogs at yesterday’s Coliseum games?

JULIUS—No, I only et two, Brute.

Your citation regarding sarcasm and wit is attributed to Oscar Wilde, but has never been verified in any of his writings. The comment I referenced about the pun is from Samuel Johnson, who took Shakespeare to task for his use of the form, saying it had some “malignant power” over the bard’s mind. So, both those notions are out and about in the world,
