I can almost smell the musk in the room. And he thought he knew it all until he fired all the ones who did. Who’s laughing now? Not the stock holders. College of Life tuition, $44 billion and counting. Moronacy has many children; some with more money than others.
I was an independent contractor for 29 years. Employers usually found me and I set the price based on industry standards and added 15% because of my expertise. Then I made sure the employer got their moneys worth. Word of mouth advertising helped.
Until lately, companies went begging for workers. Still do for some positions. Techies are merde out of luck as Silicon Valley is shedding them like a bear in summer. Just ask Twitter (former) emplyees, as well.
This sort of thing is pretty much what made me decide to leave being a contractor. I’ll decide if I want to stay, you don’t get to decide to keep me. (Yeah, I’m divorced to)
And the guy behind the desk isn’t even the boss. He’s a manager [underling] who is responsible to keeping things running smooth and without loss. He actually faces a similar situation when he reports in person to another manager. To quote De Morgan 1872:
Great fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite ’em, And little fleas have lesser fleas, and so ad infinitum. And the great fleas themselves, in turn, have greater fleas to go on; While these again have greater still, and greater still, and so on.

That’s the corporate way. Scary to think that some idiots want the government run like a corporation.

This could also apply when you try to negotiate your salary without a union to back you up.
