For some, the Confederate flag is the same as a swastika. I’m not one of these. The design for this flag was an invitation of sorts by the Confederate south to Great Britain, a statement that “We’re like you, please help us fight the northern aggressors.” This is why the Stars and Bars so resemble the Union Jack. Britain and France were gearing up to assist both sides of the war and only the intervention of Russia prevented it. The Czar said if the Western Europeans involved themselves in our family dispute, he would attack them.As a southerner, I consider the Stars and Bars to be a positive expression of “redneck” freedom and fun. I’m sorry when it is used by the KKK and others in a display of racial separatism. This said… the stars and bars was reintroduced to some of the flags of the southern states in the late 50’s by white legislators displaying their outrage over civil rights reforms, the ending of separate bathrooms, hotels, and restaurants, etc. It was a deliberate slap in the face at Civil Rights supporters and blacks in general. If a state was to decide to make the Black Pride colors part of their state flag, I would find that offensive to all non blacks. The same applies to the Stars and Bars on state flags and official documents. I have no problem with that symbol on shirts, hats, bandanas, bumper stickers and even vanity plates. I do believe, as a Mississippian whose state has used this symbol as an element in the design for over 100 years, the Stars and Bars has no place on the flag of any state that is part of the United States of America. It implies, for a radical few, the hope that the “south will rise again” to its former glory.I have heard men say these words in my home town. They wish to be totally independent of the USA though none believe slavery will be brought back – they do believe they can bring back segregation and/or send the blacks up north.I’m sorry this issue continues to resurface. We have a two party oligarchy and corporate media outlets dividing us. This is just one more wedge splitting the tree in half.Sadly, but Respectfully,C.
