Athletic scholarships are one-year renewable contracts that can be terminated at ANY time for ANY reason. Scholarship athletes are “fired” all the time. It will read like this: “University X has decided not to renew the scholarship for athlete Y for the coming year.” They don’t need to give a reason. It is particularly egregious when it is a football player who suffers a serious injury. Not only can the player lose his scholarship, but any medical complications from that injury that occur down the road are financial borne by that player. That is one of the reasons why the NU players sought union status. As it is now, players are not deemed employees and are therefore not eligible for worker’s compensation benefits.
