Thank you Mike for reminding us that, as horrible as the COVID-19 pandemic is in countries such as Trump’s America of denial, distraction, division and devastation that have suffered so much from their nations’ failures of leadership, the climate crisis is still brewing — sneaking up on those who sit complacently in their cool pan of water.
While the pandemic hit hard and fast, waking up the more effective leaders in well managed nations such as Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand and others that responded quickly, aggressively and successfully, without having to go to full shutdowns or experiencing economic downturns, and proving that we can change outcomes if we pay attention and respond accordingly (with opposite, failed outcomes in countries with failed Trumpian leaders that didn’t), the climate crisis moves more slowly, but inexorably towards a global failure that can have devastating results on a scale that will dwarf anything seen in the COVID pandemic.
And sadly, unlike the pandemic, the entire world is in this together. It will not be the case that some countries (like Japan, Taiwan, South Korea or Thailand) can have good outcomes while others (like Trump’s America or Bolsonaro’s Brazil or Löfven’s Sweden) can have massive failures.
The nations of earth need to come together to provide alternative forms of energy, alternative work and productivity strategies, mitigation strategies and carbon capture (more trees!) that can be implemented on a worldwide basis.
