Of course, there are more options. Looking at modern Germany – in the pattern of West Germany – they are well off, capitalist but also incorporate into their system what many Americans would call socialism. They believe in a true public/private partnership, and their citizenship is much better off for it. I’ve lived there and found it to be a much kinder and effective system than we have in the US.

Apples to oranges. The communists of East Germany were very different from the social democrats of today. Read up.

Basis of Capitalism is Capital (Translate Money) Basis of Socialism is the whole Society (Translate that the Social Contract and People)Which do we care most about? Look at it from the outside and our success is measured by how much money someone earns. Who cares how many people we abuse or hurt and destroy in the process. You see we really do not believe and live that all people are created equal. So the Fat Cat is really all of the others rolled together and is a whole new species that destroys everything that gets in its way.

Love this line. Very well said/written. I will steal it frequently, thus becoming a conservative capitalist.

Um yea, I have heard about all those human rights abuses in Finland and Sweden. People seem to frequently confuse economic philosophy with dictatorship as if there is a direct correlation between the two. But note, China today still has a ruthless dictatorship, but uses capitalism to its increasingly worrisome benefit. It’s not as simply as the neo-cons would have us believe.

Those are the old categories we learned in school. Now a days, in the real world, governments are always a blend of capitalism, socialism, etc. So… now we could have a nicer blend, but the radical rich control our government and run it their way.

You write clearly and well. I agree with you, in the main.

Here is some more information on the quote with which you end your post. http://www.monticello.org/site/jefferson/government-best-which-governs-least-quotation http://www.quotecounterquote.com/2010/06/that-government-is-best-which-governs.html

Here is an example of what you call “Republican Extremism!” You may want to jump ship!

Harley’s also forgetting to think of the purchasing power of money relative to time and place. While $35,000 a year made a family very well off in America a hundred years ago, and very comfortable in many parts of the world today, it doesn’t go far at all in the America of the early 21st century.

Today’s American “1% Capitalists” are a lot closer to old-time feudalism, than today’s “liberals” are to “socialism”. Stalin had nothing to do with Marxism, actually. He was a violent dictator, just like Hitler was, but he was working for the Krupps and corporations in Germany.

The countries that tend toward “socialism” DO have a better record of taking care of the populace, than bombing other folks around the world.

Corporations are pretty good at making money, but not jobs any more in this country. It has to do with whether folks at the top of them are building a strong nation, with social responsibilities, or just profits. American business is NOT “Capitalist”, but feudal in their “thought process”. Making money doesn’t HAVE to destroy people, it can, under an actual “capitalist” system, employ, and support them.

ghostkeeper, fingers don’t alaways work right, like today. Yes, I did not mean to link Stalin to krupp, only hitler. but yes, Koch and MItt is just as “tight” as other fascists to their “money men”, who actually pull the stings when they’re “in”.

You might understand it but you sure don’t get it.When we fail as a society to take care of the people we head ourselves right down the same road as Egypt, Rome, Germany (Hitler) and the other empires of Europe (France, Great Britain, Spain, etc) Just wait and you will understand the same way the South finally got to understand what ‘Integration’ meant.
