Actually, Democrats have been far more restrained that the foul-mouthed Republican bigots. For years, Republicans tried to de-legitimize the first African American president — who actually WON his elections, with not only the most votes (which Trump did not get) but outright majorities (more than 50%) of all votes cast — TWICE — the first Democrat to achieve that milestone since FDR. (Over the same 80+ year period, there were also only two Republicans who got not only the most votes but outright majorities — twice — Eisenhower and Reagan.
Republicans posted vile, racist stereotypes of Obama. They denied his legitimacy. They claimed, despite overwhelming evidence from documents and newspaper listings of the time, that he was not born in the United States. They questioned his citizenship. They questioned his religion. They even disputed the FACT that he had been Constitutional Law professor, confirmed by the university he had worked for. They made a pact, on the day he was inaugurated, to obstruct any and every policy he proposed, even if it was proposals they themselves had made in the past. They took the unprecedented step of not even holding hearings on a Supreme Court nominee many Republicans had suggested as a consensus nominee.
And now, a truly illegitimate president, who not only failed to get a majority, he didn’t even get the most votes, who demeans Muslims, Latinos, women he treats as sex objects, disabled people, war heroes, Gold Star families, suddenly calls for CIVILITY because, boo hoo, some workers at restaurants feel uncomfortable serving people who have publicly called for having them or their loved ones deported and their children taken from them.

The idea of any remote equivalence is absurd.
