The “Republican” party gradually swapped constituents with the Democrats after the Civil Rights Act and any sense of collaboration, cooperation, or compromise was eradicated and replaced with deep partisanship and stereotyping. The progressives and the moderates were driven out of both parties and both parties moved ever further to the right while the public became more accepting of socially liberal attitudes about mostly all issues. We now have a government that seems unable to take care of the public and is committed to the corporations and wealthy. This was the perfect storm that brought the resident and his special inability to tell the truth to the White House. We get the government we deserve.
