If he really believed that people love him, he wouldn’t keep working so hard to convince himself it’s true. But, of course, he doesn’t do “love” and he doesn’t recognize it when he sees it (if he sees it, which seems kind of unlikely). It’s just another word, like all the other words that he babbles out until someone, somewhere cheers… or he can convince himself they did.
