Next step: just stop elections altogether and put the corporations in charge of everyone. Then the corporations duke it out with hostile takeovers and merger until we are left with America Inc.

Pretty soon we’ll have a max headroom style dystopian democracy where the tv networks will be awarded political power based on who has the highest ratings (or largest market share).

When presented with two choices on a list of issues that actually have impact on their daily lives, virtually all Democrats and Independents choose the one that the Democrats include in their agenda over that favored by the Republicans. No surprise there. The weird part is that just over half of self identified Republicans also choose the Democrat’s options, as long as they are not informed that they are Democratic. If the two choices are labeled by party, the Republicans fall in line and 78% of them reject the option that they chose before they knew that it was supported by Democrats. Given the fact that the Republicans are supporting positions that are soundly rejected by the majority of the American people, they can only win by keeping as many of those people as possible from voting at all, and by confusing the rest of them. It’s been a winning strategy for a while now, and Fox etc are working really hard to keep it that way.
