I recall a serious battle between myself and the President of Gestetner Canada. They came to me soon after being hired to sign the papers to allow them to take some pay each week to donate to United Way. I refused, citing the need to explore United Ways operating methodology and get back to him. No internet in the late 70’s. Numerous red flags came up after just a few weeks of asking questions and finding the answers in the local library. When I gave a final refusal I was told that was not acceptable and my job ‘might’ be in jeopardy. I went to the local government office called Service Canada and asked politely about this kind of action and was told that there were recently laws put in place to stop companies from forcing this but there was no legislation protecting my job. (there was soon after) but i had moved on by then, some two years later. In those two years I was denied promotions and raises. This kind of crap was real.
