    The appeal of a haiku

    I never grasped

    it is a mystery to me

    There once was an artist named Darrin Bell

    whose characters spoke Haiku – not very well.

    Do you think they will find

    some form not of that kind

    but funny? Who knows. Only time will tell.

    Satchel, the sweet if a bit dense pooch of “Get Fuzzy” fame, wrote a haiku in an old strip, almost exactly (IIRC) like the one Rosenkranz makes up here.

    I suppose that composition has occurred to others, too… the number words just happen to have the requisite number of syllables to make it low-hanging fruit.

    The attribute of true haiku that everyone seems to ignore is that they’re supposed to have a seasonal theme…

    no, not about the Thanksgiving turkey, or Santa Claus…

    but describing the moment when, for instance, an apple, or a falling leaf, encapsulates the feeling of autumn.

    A not-so-young guy on GoComics

    Attempted to write a haiku.

    But ’twas to no avail;

    Each attempt seemed to fail.

    So he decided a Limerick would do.

    Why not 4,6,4 or 8. 12. 8 or whatever. I know it wouldn’t be Haiku but it could have another name set in the depths of history. Maybe a history of another culture. African perhaps.
