When I was stationed in Massachusetts, I was a member of the aero club. Flying was affordable then. There was a small airport about 15 minutes flying time away in Tewskbury next to a McDonald’s. So on a couple of weekends we’d pack the kids up in the back of the plane, and fly off for lunch. We’d park the plane on the grass, walk through the gate into the parking lot, get our Big Macs and sit on the picnic bench outside and watch other airplanes try to land.
The following school year the boys were given an assignment to write about something exciting that they did and one of my sons chose this event and how he flew to McDonald’s for lunch. The teacher called us in and explained that although the assignment was well written, she told them it had to be on something they really did and was concerned that my son might have difficulty separating fantasy from reality. She just shook her head when we explained that it was “for real.”
