I sure don’t get this. Is there some standard greeting for birds the man is about to say?

In Britain, seeing a magpie is supposed to be bad luck, which can be averted by saying hello and asking about its wife…
…I guess the magpie saw another magpie recently and forgot to greet him! ;-)
