I was thinking as I read this cartoon about the position McConnell & Ryan are in. They really have no choice but to publicly support Don Juan, the President and head of their political party. Anything less than unqualified support would be seen nationally, if not globally, as either dooming the Administration or plotting a coup. But they have to walk a very fine line. If they ever do decide to remove him from office before he causes even more damage, they will have to act very quickly and decisively. Virtually no advance warning.
Listen to what people from professional military and high-level espionage backgrounds are saying about Don Juan. These are highly cautious, studiously apolitical individuals of generally conservative leanings. They have to be apolitical in their careers because they have to work with, for, and gain the trust of people from all points of the spectrum. The things people like John O. Brennan and Michael Hayden have been saying are unprecedented. It’s an unmistakable sign that even battle-scarred, hardened veterans of war and Washington realize what a danger this man is.
I believe Congress is betting the country on Mr. Mueller. If Don Juan removes him, I think that will be the catalyst that causes McConnell & Ryan to remove Don Juan. Similarly, if Mueller makes clear that he is ready to indict a sitting President, I think they will do their utmost to get him to resign but, failing that, they will remove him. Mitch & Paul are in a tough spot on a huge stage, and they have to tread lightly. I could be wrong. The Speaker & the Majority Leader could be as ethically-challenged as the Commander-in-Chief and when their moment of truth comes, as it seems it must, they could prove as spineless and morally compromised as they appear to be.
