The people – the very People Lincoln referred to – are underrepresented in the House of Representatives. Their numbers were locked 435 in after the census of 1910 when the US population was 91 million and haven’t been released since. The populace of the U.S. is now 321 million. Solving for X, using 435 over 91 million, there should be 1534 Representatives in the current House. 1534. Think that would force a little clear water into our swampy Legislative processes? I sure do.
The Senate was INTENDED to represent State’s Rights; that’s why fixed territorial and proprietary imperatives are recognised there; they were built in from the start. To create the BALANCE in the Legislative Branch that our Founders intended, back in 1787, the House MUST reflect the growth in the voting populace.
Locked at 435, demonstrably, every year the House becomes more and more subject to the same, ingrown, media and monetary jiggery-pokery that affects the Senate, mocking the trust our Founders put in constitutional democracy.
Want to clear the ‘swamp’? Increase the flow-through. Increase the Rep count to 1534 and revise that number – as the Founders intended – AFTER EVERY CENSUS. Put the people in closer touch with their Reps. Let the Reps stay home and vote through secure websites. This isn’t rocket science. Democracy or Oligarchy? Democracy or Monarchy? The choice becomes more vivid every Kochy Trumping day.
