Clark, if you’re not on a watch list these days, you’re either a total fail or an extraordinary agent.

Actually communists were (and still are) virulent racists. So the first panel does not make sense.

Let the dead be. We’ve been in a “full Nelson” for close to 2 weeks!

spouted with “and he was also on the watch list as a convicted cop killer.”
Show me a news report of the copper he killed. Bear in mind he was imprisoned from 1964 till 1990 and for planning sabotage against the state.
…cubefarmer also mentions “links to at least one Marxist terrorist group”
Yep, the SA Communist party. Goodness me, that’s news and that’s just terrible. :-| Aligned with Commies? Just for that I would align with the racist National Party and oppress the majority of the population for sure. :-|
The lies you lot come up with are quite astonishing.
Sheesh, you guys are a riot. :-|

…it occured to me that the National Party wasn’t considered the “racist” party. There was still the Konserwatiewe Party or Conservative Party and the ultra-right conservative Herstigte Nasionale Party" or Reformed National Party. They were more racist. Yeah, even more racist.

All of this carping about Mandela, the man, is disheartening. Yes, he did stumble around in trying to find a viable way to rid South Africa of apartheid. Perhaps, some ways would not be considered acceptable, but he finally chose a way that was more or less decent and respectable. Let the man become legend (he will become legend) and let the legend be honorable and inspirational to others. Let Mandela, the man, be of interest only to historians and biographers.

Just to be clear, that’s sarcastic! In the real afterlife, TSA will be working for the Down There side.

I can’t fathom this line of thinking. We don’t need myths or legends. We need the truth. (By the way, Mandela agreed.)

What you or I or Mandela want is not reality. Ted. Man has always created legends, both about the good and the bad (none I know of about the ugly except Medusa) and used those legends as examples of what mankind should aspire to or condemn. A legend will be created from Mandela, the man. Let it be good. If one wants “the rest of the story” or “the truth”, there will be historians and biographers to turn to.

It is true that he will become a legend, his human foibles consigned to “who cares?” The problem with that is, if we continue to scrub clean and sanctify the unholy, we will continue to follow not only the best of the fallible lot, but the worst as well. Maybe if we had the stomach to see those who would lead us as they are, and the will to sort out the good from the bad in what they would feed us, we would have avoided the worst of the lot. I’ll leave it to your own discretion to determine who these may be. One word more though: the ancient conquerors, Kahn, Attila, Alexander, conquered first by the sword. Modern conquerors have often done so by appealing to the worst in us first, then the sword. Hitler and Lenin come to mind.
