The USA will always focus on the one constant in all these countries, that being what resource(s) will remain profitable.

The U.S. is just like most people; operating out of perceived self-interest.

Who profits most from the cost of gasoline? The government. There’s no amount of government profit that will outrage a lib. They live off government profits.

F59: of course US foreign relations are defined by our (perceived) self interest. But there are exceptions, such as our involvement in the Balkans in the 1990s. That was more or less altruistic; there wasn’t much significant national interest at stake there. BC: if there was an economic alternative to oil, it would already be adopted. One might as well say “Cease biological dependence on oxygen”, or “Cease economic dependence upon a monetary system”. Easier said than done.

“The govt profits most from high gas prices”, Jmatt. On behalf of Exxon, BP, Chevron etc…Thank you. We’d never dare to tell that one.

Baslim: won’t work now as far as suppressing prices. The global oil consumption pattern is completely different now. China and India have industrialized enough that they keep oil demand up even during a recession. Conservation is still a good common sense approach to dealing with this on a personal level. By the way, the US can drill domesticallly all it wants with very little effect on world oil prices. We just don’t have the reserves or capacity.
