The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act – in a nutshell is is about the privacy of patient information.

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act..

While there are many aspects to this law, one of the parts deals with private patient information, and its confidentiality… only the patient can permit the information to be released to whomever they wish, by means of signed consent…

Only in special cases, as outlined in the law, can a hospital provide information…. (in the case of insurance processing for a visit, as an example… a patient consents to this for billing processing when they are registered to stay for treatment and care)..
(I have worked in Release Of Information/Medical Records Correspondence for several years)…

There’s also aspects that deal with how to dispose of old records, and when paper information is no longer necessary…. including shredding….

Also, much emphasis is placed on making sure that no Personally Identifiable Information is given out, displayed, or transmitted (e.g., DOB, Social, Previous Addresses..)….that includes talking about patient conditions in a non-private setting, such as an elevator, or in the lobby, or even while at the bus stop, or “at the neighborhood grill party”… which is probably the sentiment that “Hokie1979” sees, as do I… the need for reminders like this one to be in the view of staff, as this sort of thing is at risk, especially in our “Twitter Age”…

I don’t burn time and electricity on any ‘social’ website so I have no idea what’s going on there. And, just like before they were invented, life goes on….
