If it does turn out to be a dream, it’s been going on for a very long time. It would be disappointing if dream sequences turned into the fallback plot driver.

I’m sorry you’ve experienced having one or more friends who acted that way. I guess I’ve known some people like that, but somehow dodged the bullet of having them as besties.

It’s true, too. I once drew a nice big X on my right foot. I knew the surgeon, but hey, can’t hurt!

Eye of the beholder. Several other characters are pursuing careers—engineering, psychology (yes, seems like a bad fit so I hope that one changes her mind), business, veterinrian, etc. Sometimes a humorous concept can be built around it, like Tiffany and Bets’s various business ventures, but frankly I’m not interested in knowing a character’s courseload, grades, professors, etc. I do concede, as I have before, that if this were in real time, 10 years would be a tad long to be an undecided major in community college, but it’s not. These are 2nd-year students or not much more.

A funny joke too, IMO. The numerous advanced degree holders in my family tree aren’t stupid either. But we do have a sense of humor.

I first learned that joke from my dad, PhD. I’ve seen nothing to contradict it in the intervening decades.

Would be very stressful, I’m sure. Definitely a field that deserves being well-compensated. On a related note, reminds me of being a young adult having surgery and asking my assigned LPN what the difference was between her job and an RN. She said “a whole lot of money.”

So many possibilities, many of them not medical at all. Her whole life is unfolding before her.

I think all of the characters’ reactions are pretty typical of real life, exaggerated as is often the case for comic effect. Years ago when local TV came to film my daughter’s Girl Scout troop’s cookie sale (newsworthy, right?), I was running the sale, but I am so camera shy I got the other leader to do the on-camera interview. Does everyone want to be on TV? That would be a resounding “no” from my perch. It’s the equivalent of worrying your pants look baggy. Frank is just delivering a punch line based on Luann’s shirt. And the reporter? Typical, I’m afraid, but if she knows Greg and Karen personally, is she really thin-skinned enough to be insulted by the portrayal? Hope not, but it’s not for me to say.
Question whatever or whoever you want, but remember there is a difference between straight news reporting, commentary, opinion, human interest, arts reviews, etc. If a news host invites guests to discuss what they see as potential problems with Candidate X, for example, you’re seeing one point of view. I think most people can distinguish between fact and opinion, but maybe not.
