    Actually, we DO “regulate the heck” out of those things. Cars, for example, can’t be sold for use on the street without a bunch of safety features, from head and tale lights to seat belts to electrical systems that don’t catch on fire. If one of these systems fails several times, millions of cars might be recalled to be fixed.

    Tobacco hasn’t been outlawed, but there are lots of regulations on it, not just who gets to use it, but how it can be processed, what can be added to it, etc.

    Alcohol similarly has a lot of regulations on it before it gets to the consumer, and the regulations about who can buy it, including clear laws saying that if a bartender sell to a drunk person, the bar and bar tender are liable if something bad happens.

    And while there isn’t a FEDERAL background check to buy tobacco and alcohol, there is a STATE background check for age, by checking IDs for anyone who looks even close to too young.
