That’s great, Elly, a real leap forward, as long as you don’t take into account the fact that John works to pay for the food you’ve just cooked, the appliances you’ve just cooked it on, the house in which you live, the furniture on which you’ve sat while eating…

Elly is just one of those people who prefers to see the glass as half-empty, when she really has quite a cushy life: they have a nice house, their kids never struggle with money in university (which they all attend) because John and Elly bail them out whenever they need help, they can afford to travel without the kids regularly, she doesn’t have to work if she doesn’t want to, they get new cars whenever they need them (never second-hand), they extend their house and redecorate regularly, her husband buys her a store because she wants to own one. Elly doesn’t even need to clean because they can afford cleaners: http://catalog.fborfw.com/indexid.php?q=7075

Anyway, the price of coffee has risen by 70 cents since this strip ran, but at least the food still costs the same: http://catalog.fborfw.com/indexid.php?q=3990&Submit=Search

I might be more sympathetic if John had specifically forbidden Elly to buy the $20 can opener. As it was, she spent $143.90 on kitchen gadgets ($100 more than originally) bought on an impulse after she’d planned to buy only a can opener, so she comes across as a total hypocrite here.

Besides, for all that John shouldn’t have said last week that it was “his” money, Elly really isn’t someone who ought to be in charge of the household budget: http://catalog.fborfw.com/indexid.php?q=3834

I guess there’s still no decision on what year this is supposed to be. The original had the final price at $43.90:

That’s still a fairly close price to what those items would cost today. The official website says that the strip is taking place in the current day (see the Q&Eh? section in Behind the Scenes) but Lynn has also answered queries in the Coffee Talk “blog” to say that it’s 30 years ago. Either way, that’s a huge shopping bill for those items! Perhaps today’s strip is taking place 30 years in the future amidst a great paring knife shortage and scissors rationing.

    Ha ha…malevolent bath duck.

See, happy Pattersons can exist and the strip is much nicer because no one is shouting at another character or scowling. I prefer these rare occasions we see the For Better part.

It would be nice to see the Pattersons doing everyday things without thunderclouds and scowls. They do seem to get bent out of shape over the slightest thing.

How did Elly bring Lizzie in a taxi if Lizzie’s car seat was in the locked car?

Yes, I agree, too jumbled , too many panels, too much text these days.

How short is Mike in the first panel? Did he shrink in the cold water?

I guess Elly has decided to just quit pretending that she feels any pangs of conscience when she gossips about her friend behind her back: http://www.fborfw.com/strip_fix/archives/003747.php http://www.fborfw.com/strip_fix/archives/003752.php
