    @pelican47 Children in Japan often receive these lovely figures as gifts. They form a large retinue of characters with different levels of importance

    These are a collection of dolls forming different members of a kingdom. Every year they are added to. king, queen, prince, adviser, etc. They are given on boys / girls day, which is in place of a birthday. Now they have even added Samurai’s to it.

    These are NOT heirlooms they are expensive toys, and most are discarded after the children are of college age. It is considered extremely bad taste to re-gift them. Most westerners attach more sentential value than Japanese do.

    As most people do yes I do base my life in part as to what others think. i.e. others think I should wear pants when in public and I do :)
    As to the dolls I had them for more than 10 years actually after I found out they were children toys. I really got rid of them because I grew tired of them.
