    Slippery slope!

    How come it’s never a slippery slope in the other direction? Never a comment about how if we get rid of any of the regulations governing the private sector, we will slip into a situation where there will be so little regulation that a boom and bust market will be destructive.

    Nope.

    It’s always, “if we pass that oversight law, we’ll all have to wear the same brown coats and eat government-supplied oatmeal every meal!”

    Who started a war against a nation that was not a national security threat? Hint: they said that it would “pay for itself.” $700 Billion dollars paid just for Iraq, while cutting tax rates, is not sound economic strategy.

    That said, yes, Republicans got us into this mess, but we won’t get out of it by doing what’s best for the rich.

    Hear, hear! I love what you wrote about the “mixed economy.” The obvious truth is that our economy is a combination of what I would call utilities (police, fire, roads, etc.), and free market (yachts, diamonds, etc.).

    Political discussions like the current one about heath care should be framed by the argument “which economy should this particular market be a part of?” All too often we hear the absolutist’s slogan, “the government is bad at everything!” Which is beside the point, but liberals seem to always want to punch that tar baby with, “corporate bureaucracy is just as bad, maybe worse.”

    There is waste everywhere. Reagan was playing the rubes with his welfare queen stories. When people want to throw the baby out with the bathwater, they probably didn’t like the baby all that much.

    Right now, the people want health care to be a utility. The rich want to keep making money off the sick. Guess we know which side the Congess and the President are on.

    Rall and Toles create gourmet propaganda with fresh ingredients. Your propaganda, in comparison, are twice-frozen Hot Pockets well past their expiration date, left outside in the August heat for a couple of weeks.

    i’ll always trust that a private company will treat me with the utmost respect, not like i was born a second ago.

    because i believe in a place of perfect markets. where constant competition squeezes any unnecessary profits from sellers because, instantly, a new company will emerge that will hit the sweet spot price point for me, the almighty consumer. here in the land where cornering a market has no advantages, no backroom deals, no kickbacks for favors. i live in a place where it is super easy to quit my job and, even quicker still, get a new job that has my perfect heath care plan.

    and these beatific companys would never get in bed with bad old government and keep other companies from making the same thing loads cheaper, because, i mean, who would then have the money to make those lovely, soothing tv commercials for those pretty pills that i need. they make me feel so good …

    i like these words better:

    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

    how do we change the world that Mr. Rall so deftly illustrates in the panel above? i believe we will have a better chance if we take to heart these eighteenth century words than if we fear that an even bigger bully will, someday, give us a darned good whuppin’.
